<image:caption>Memento Mori 2013 | Wood, leather, clay, metal, glass After visiting the exhibit, Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection at the Chicago Cultural Center in 2012, I decided to create my own skeleton-themed piece, using stuffed leather for the skeleton. This idea led me down a rabbit hole of anatomy books and pushing the leather medium to the limit of what I could do with it. A memento mori is a reminder that death comes for all of us—it means “remember you will die.” I see it not as something to be worried or sad about, but as a reminder to live it up during the time you have (#YOLO, “live your best life”).</image:caption>

There I saw many cathedrals and myriad depictions of the four Biblical evangelists shown as their symbolic animals: Matthew (human), Mark (eagle), Luke (bull), and John (lion). In these pieces, the main sculpted bust in the interior is the symbolic animal, while the human form of the saint along with their other symbolic aspects is painted on the side of the box. In addition, the saint’s day is listed on the box, as well as the constellation with which each evangelist is associated. Private collection</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wilgefortis 2006 | beads, sequins, velvet, wood Wilgefortis was once believed to be a Christian martyr, but now her story is thought to have been fabricated as an explanation of representations of feminine-looking Christ figures in lavish robes, created during the 14th century. According to the story, she was the daughter of a Turkish king, and one of a group of septuplets. She converted to Christianity and took a vow of celibacy. Her father decided to marry her off against her wishes. On the eve of her wedding, she prayed to become so ugly that her soon-to-be husband would no longer want her. That night she grew a full beard, and her groom broke the engagement. As punishment, her father had her crucified. While she was dying on the cross, a traveling violinist played for her, moving her so much that she kicked off one of her silver slippers as payment. Private collection</image:caption>

She is associated with love, beauty, and fertility, and is also a practitioner of magic and manipulation, in addition to being connected with the warrior Valkyries. Here, she is seen in her falcon-feather cape which allows her to transform into a falcon, riding in her cat-drawn chariot. <image:caption>Cherub 1999 | wood, leather, metal, gilding, fabric, tagua nut Today, cherubs are depicted as chubby and cute. This is far from their original, awesome form as four-faced, four-armed guardian angels who keep anything out of heaven that will defile it. When Adam and Eve committed the Original Sin, the archangel Michael wept. From his tears sprang the four cherubim. Using flaming swords, they prevented Adam and Eve from reentering the Garden of Eden. They were used as guardians of the Ark of the Covenant as well. The prophet Ezekiel saw them in a vision of God, where they traveled on wheels covered in eyes. He called them the “four living creatures.” The cherubim are also associated with the seasons: eagle, winter; lion, fall; bull, summer; man, spring.</image:caption>

During the time of creation, Nut and her brother, the earth god Geb, were very fond of each other. For some reason, the sun god, Ra, was offended by their constant embrace, so he sent the sky god, Shu, to separate them. When Shu carried out his order, their separation caused the creation of Earth and the sky. The barque of the Sun travels across the arch of Nut’s back every day and night. Painted on the inside of this box are Egyptian depictions of the constellations. On the sides are the god of the Sun, Ra, and the goddess of the Moon, Isis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Shiva Nataraja Dancing Time Into Being 2000 | wood, leather, fabric, gilding, metal According to Hindu beliefs, Shiva, as Sri Nataraja, the Dancing Shiva, symbolizes divine activity and the source of movement in the universe, including the movement of time. His five-fold dance includes creation, veiling, preservation, destruction and release. The dance depicted in this sculpture is the creation dance, but later, when the end of the world is near, Shiva will again dance, but in a dance of destruction. He holds in one hand a little drum shaped like an hourglass. This beats out the rhythm of creation and the tempo of time. Another hand holds the flame of spiritual light, which burns off the veil of temporal life to reveal the void of eternity. Shiva dances on the back of the demon of ignorance, who drives people’s souls back into the never-ending cycle of death and rebirth. Shiva’s streaming hair symbolizes the wild hair of an aesthetic and also the Ganges River which came down to Earth from the Milky Way through Shiva’s hair. The halo of fire encircling the dancing figure symbolizes the cosmos.</image:caption>

One day while in the woods with his hunting dogs, he came upon a clearing. There, in a lovely pool was the Moon goddess, Artemis, bathing with her attendants. Because she was known as the virgin goddess, she was less than pleased to see a man watching her. So, she turned him into a stag and his own dogs tore him to pieces. Private collection Ganesha 2007 | Fabric, embroidery floss, sequins, wood backing | 4”x 6” In the Hindu religion, Ganesha is worshipped as the lord of beginnings, the lord of obstacles, patron of arts and sciences, and the god of intellect and wisdom. He is the son of the gods Shiva and Parvati, and is often depicted as having one broken tusk and always a big belly. Often, in one of his arms he holds a bowl of sweets. One account says that his parents were so horrified by his physical additions that they had nothing to do with him, leaving him to be raised by an aunt and uncle. As a child, he was unhappy with his physical characteristics. So, his new parents took him to a home for disabled children. There he saw people who couldn't even walk, much less play soccer like he did. After that, he had a much better attitude. In fact, he wrote of the incident, “From that time to this I have never complained. I think life is beautiful and I enjoy living it.” By all accounts, he was a very pleasant and kind man. He moved to the U.S. and showed in many carnivals, including his own. He was known as the “Three Legged Wonder” and the “King of Freaks.” He died in 1966 at 78 years of age. He was survived by his wife, Helen, and several children.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Prince Randian and Johnny Eck 2001 | wood, leather, fabric, paint, cord | 23” x 16” x 72” Prince Randian came to the U.S. from British Guiana in 1889. He was a sideshow attraction for 45 years, married and had five children. He was 63 years old when he died. He got along by doing everything with his lips. He could build things, shave and even roll a cigarette. His method of ambulation consisted of wiggling his hips and shoulders in a sort of rolling, caterpillar-like movement. If you would like to see him in action, rent the 1932 Tod Browning movie, Freaks. A picture from the set of that movie, in which Johnny Eck also appeared, was the inspiration for my sculpture to contain both figures on one platform. Johnny Eckhardt was born August 27, 1910, along with his twin brother Robert, who was "normal.” They were great co-conspirators and spent almost their entire lives together. Johnny died in 1991. In later years he was a recluse in his Baltimore home and became a painter. He was incredibly agile just getting around on his hands. Also see Freaks to see him in motion—he was wonderfully graceful and fast. Johnny was also cheerful and had quite a good sense of humor.</image:caption>

He was the only human oddity in this series who was not content with the way he was. All he wanted was to be a totally normal man, but his hands were too huge to even hold a pencil—a serious hindrance during his time in business college. The stand of this sculpture is natural oak instead of being painted, since Wadlow refused to be dressed in costume when he exhibited—he always wore a standard (albeit huge) suit. Wadlow was also a Mason and the tallest Boy Scout who ever lived. He died at only 22 years of age. Since a pituitary giant has disproportionately long limbs, his nerves couldn’t quite get messages from his feet all the way up to his brain. So, when one of the new leg braces he was wearing rubbed a raw area on his leg, it became infected before he even knew. He died from the resulting infection.</image:caption>

The baby was also hairy and died within hours of his birth. The figure in this sculpture wears a replica of a costume Julia embroidered herself. <image:caption>Baby Thelma 2002 | wood, leather, fabric, paint, metal | 16” x 16” x 72” Baby Thelma was a 655 lb. “fat lady.” I chose her for my sideshow, since during her childhood my mother met Thelma. Mom was spending the night with a friend, and the family went to the carnival that night. She became very distressed in the sideshow tent and was crying her eyes out. When she got to Thelma, the fat lady took her up on her platform, gave her an autographed photo, and was generally sweet to her. The butterflies on the stand symbolize Thelma’s beautiful soul.</image:caption>

<image:caption>William Henry Johnson—Zip the What Is It? 2002 | wood, leather, fabric, paint, cord | 18” x 13” x 72” Zip was a microcephalic (or pinhead) who toured extensively with P.T. Barnum. When he first began exhibiting, he was often in a cage as the “Monkey Man.” Although he later showed without the cage, he was partial to the furry suit and continued to wear it. He took up the violin to gain more attention when exhibiting. He also carried around a popgun with which to shoot other performers who were getting too much attention. Microcephaly is often associated with mental retardation, but Zip’s last words (to his sister) supposedly were, “Well sis, we sure fooled them all.” He is the partial basis for Bill Griffith’s wonderful comic strip, Zippy the Pinhead.</image:caption>

While in the British army, he reached the rank of major and was decorated for bravery for his service in the Desert Mountain Corps in Africa. Upon his return to Britain, he squandered his inheritance and decided the way to make money was to become a self-made freak. After 150 hours, 500 sittings and $3,000 (this was in the 1920s) with tattoo artist George Burchett, he was transformed into the “Great Omi,” tattooed from head to toe. Later, his similarly tattooed wife joined the act as “The Omette.”</image:caption>

She played Charlotte, a dwarf girl whose mother refused to acknowledge her daughter’s “difference.” Her mother even went to the point of destroying neighborhood yard gnomes and buying her daughter a full-sized horse for her birthday. The town’s wealthiest man, played by Marcello Mastroianni, falls madly in love with the charming and intelligent dwarf. They have a happy marriage, until the circus comes to town. After so many years of denying who she truly is, Charlotte finally runs off with the circus.</image:caption>

It has only been recently that they have even been filmed in the wild. It’s no wonder this creature has been the source of many legends and stories for hundreds of years. Here I’ve depicted him as the enormous creature that destroyed the Nautilus in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.</image:caption>

The book told of the adventurer Mandeville, his travels in Asia and the Far East and the amazing things he saw there. <image:caption>Vespertilio Homo—Moon Hoax 2007 | wood, leather, fabric, paint, gilding, clay | 14” x 22” x 7” In 1835, The Sun, a newspaper printed in New York City, published an early example of “yellow-dog” journalism (sensational articles not properly researched, or even just completely made up, specifically to sell papers). They wrote that British astronomer Sir John Herschel had spied life on the Moon with his new telescope. One race of life-forms were people covered in copper-colored fur with bat-like wings. They happily flew around all day, except when they were sitting cross-legged on the ground eating a yellow gourd-like fruit. The series of six articles made The Sun the largest-selling newspaper in the world.</image:caption>

The creature was sporadically reported before and after those dates, with some sightings as recent as 2005. The Mothman was seen often until the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967, when 46 people were killed. The figure depicted here is the yokai (supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons) version, Tanuki, a shape-shifter and trickster, though usually more of a prankster. <image:caption>The Jersey Devil 2007 | wood, leather, fabric, paint, gilding, clay | 12” x 23” x 12” The Jersey Devil is a legendary creature said to inhabit the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey. Supposedly, in the 18th century, a woman who already had 12 children with a less-than helpful husband, became pregnant with her 13th child. She cursed the unwanted child, and shortly after birth it turned into the creature you see here and flew up the chimney. There have been sightings ever since that time. The most occurred in 1909, when thousands of people reported seeing the creature. People still see the creature, with the most recent reported sighting in 2002.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Coatlicue (2021) In Aztec stories, Coatlicue’s sacrifice (decapitation) began present creation. She is often depicted wearing a skirt of snakes and a necklace of hearts and hands. In this version, she is depicted as a rattlesnake, native to the area where her story originates. The hand and heart refer to her vestments in classic depictions. The hummingbird refers to her son, the god of sun and war, Huitzliopochtli, who is often shown as a hummingbird.</image:caption>

She governs the functioning of creation and is sometimes depicted as a fierce warrior goddess wielding spears or bow and arrow. Kali began creation by uttering the first word, “ohm.” She is not only the creator goddess, but a destroyer as well. Once, in that capacity, she was called on to rid the world of warring demons, and she got so out of control her consort, Shiva, had to calm her. He is depicted here as a half-moon shape, his personal symbol.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Icarus 2006 | beads, velvet, metal, wood, paint | 18” x 18” The artist, sculptor, architect and engineer Daedalus and his son, Icarus, had been prisoners of King Minos of Crete. To escape, they had to get over the sea to mainland Greece. Daedalus fashioned wings of feathers and wax for the two of them to wear so they could fly across the expanse. He told Icarus to fly neither too high, nor too low, for the Sun would melt the wax or the humidity of the ocean would weigh down the feathers. Icarus delighted too much in the flight, and flew too near the Sun, melting his wings and causing him to fall to his death in the sea (which is now called the Icarion Sea). This story is the basis of the phrase, “take the middle path.” Private collection</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thinking of Frida 2006 | beads, fabric, metal, wood, clay, paint | 30” x 36” Frida Kahlo is a big influence on my artwork. Here I’m thinking of Frida using a design of her invention—the “window” in my forehead. I’ve also employed lace used in some of her self-portraiture and other symbols for her. The “sugar skulls” suspended from the cross beams memorialize Frida, Diego Rivera, and some of my relatives who have died. The cross shape is my homage to roadside memorials and the Catholicism of the Mexico, which are also art influences.</image:caption>

This type of bird has been described in many different mythologies, including Greece, the Middle East and Asia. In Christian mythology, the phoenix was created when fire from the flaming sword of the Cherubim dropped on a bird's nest in the Garden of Eden. It is a symbol of renewal and rebirth and as such is sometimes associated with Christianity and Jesus.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yggdrasil, the World Tree 2004 | Beads, sequins, velvet, felt, wood, cord | 16” x 24” In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil held up the universe. It grew out of the body of the frost giant, Ymir. Its branches hold up the heavens, while its roots extend to the three main parts of the world: Jotunheim, the land of the frost giants; Asgard, the home of the gods; and Niflheim, the underworld. Three wells nourish the roots of the tree. The well in Asgard is guarded by the Norns (the fates). The second well is guarded by Mimir. The third root of the tree is constantly gnawed by Nidhogg, a giant serpent, who will eventually chew all the way through at Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods.</image:caption>

Christ is both God and man; the Gryphon both eagle and lion, holding dominion of both the sky and the ground. The eagle represents the spiritual, heavenly aspects of Christ, while the lion shows His kingly strength and divinity. The gryphon was often used in gargoyles to represent Christ.
